How it all began ....
An article "Historic school to shut down in 2019" (read about it) appeared in The Star Newspapers. That was what stated it all. Snapshot of this article was circulated in our WhatsApp chat group. Siew Kok commented that although PMS has always been his polling centre, there was nothing significant about it. His going back there has always been a matter-of-fact and meaningless. He proposed that with the impending closure we should make a visit "back to school". This will be more meaningful in that we are able to visit our Alma Mater one more time before development overwhelms her.
The next wonderful thing that happened was we got connected back with our Std 1C
teacher, a teacher of HALF
A CENTURY AGO !
Jimmy arranged for Siew Kok and myself to call on Mrs Lim at her house in
Greenlane. She consented to meet us, obviously not even being able to remember
any one of us at all ! This excited our mates from both Central and overseas
and encouraged us to arrange a meet-up. The following are some notable comments
from other 69ners:-
"It was in this school our bond was first established, which blossomed into friendship that has continued until today and will, hopefully, last for many more years to come."
" ... when I went to school then, I hardly had breakfast or had money to buy
food to eat in the tuck shop. Mrs Lim was kind to me and sometimes fed me.
These childhood memories make me cry. "
Another suggested to call this visit "Our journey home - to find our roots". He continued by describing "the beautiful trees we are today is a product very much driven by the environment and that is our roots is in Std 1 where the nourishment and anchoring started - speaking as a non-PMS student but equally proud of all our successes regardless".
I view this as a very auspicious meet-up and invited Mr GE Ooi of MBS to attend. He reciprocated by offering to host the occasion in the school. We even have five of our mates who came all the way from Central to "go back to school". It was indeed an auspicious occasion going back to MBS and onward back to PMS too. What's more, we were subsequently treated to lunch at Hameediyah Restaurant !
